03 - What is this?
The pre-dawn wake-up beat
A quick, friendly explainer.
“Tung tung tung sahur” is a meme that grew out of the nightly ritual of waking people up for sahur - the pre-dawn meal eaten before fasting during Ramadan. In many places, a knock or a call is how the neighborhood gets everyone up in time to eat.
The internet took that warm, slightly chaotic ritual and turned it into a beat. The phrase is intentionally rhythmic and comedic: three firm “tungs” and then the word “sahur,” like a drum call that is equal parts helpful and very, very awake.
There is no single, official origin to point to - it is a shared, playful thing that people remix in their own way. This site is a little toy built in that spirit. Tap around, make some noise, and have fun with it.
